New Birchmount Hospital
$1 Billion Investment
Scarborough-Agincourt, April 14, 2022 – MPP Babikian joined the Premier of Ontario, the Minister of Health, Minister Seniors and Accessibility, MPP Vijay Thanigasalam, MPP Christina Mitas, and CEO Elizabeth Buller of the Scarborough Health Network to make a major historic announcement to build a new hospital at the current site of the Birchmount (Grace) Hospital. In 2019, the government invested $500,000 to help Scarborough Health Network plan the redevelopment of the emergency department of the Birchmount Hospital.
Throughout the planning process, it became clear that more than a new emergency department was needed to continue to provide the care patients and families in Scarborough and the surrounding communities need. Building on the work done to date, the government is investing an additional $3 million to plan a new Birchmount Hospital. The investment is a key part of Scarborough Health Network’s broader plan to transform health care in the region. The network plans to build a new hospital by making major renovations to the existing facility and building a new infrastructure over the course of phased billion-dollar redevelopment. Planning is underway to build a new, state-of-the-art in-patient tower with more than 200 new beds, 14 new operating rooms, and additional space to support future growth. Once completed, the Birchmount Hospital will have over 450 beds, nearly doubling the current capacity.
Health care services at the hospital are also planned to be expanded as part of the redevelopment, including critical and emergency care, mental health and addictions care, and stroke and rehabilitation care. With these enhanced services, Scarborough Health Network will be able to provide high-quality care to patients for generations to come.
The Premier stated “We will be investing over $1 billion dollars in a number of significant projects across the Scarborough Health Network. This investment will support the building of a new hospital, right here at Birchmount.”
The Premier concluded “it will also expand emergency care services at the Centenary Hospital…fund a new chronic kidney disease program at Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre… [others] refused to make the investments needed to keep pace with Scarborough’s growth… They talked…did studies…asked for report after report. The result was delay after delay…as the people of Scarborough waited.”
MPP Babikian stated: “I am proud and humbled to be able to participate in this historic announcement. For far too long, Scarborough-Agincourt has been ignored. Not anymore. After 15 years of neglect, broken promises, dilapidated infrastructure, and lip service, we are delivering what the people of ScarboroughAgincourt have been asking for years. I am delivering on my commitment to better serve the people of Scarborough-Agincourt and Scarborough at-large. Today is a landmark day for our residents. The wait is over. A new dawn is shining on Scarborough-Agincourt. I am honoured to represent the great community of Scarborough-Agincourt. I will leave no stone unturned to continue to improve the quality of life for the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt and make it a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre
In addition to the new hospital announcement, a new chronic kidney disease program at Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre in Scarborough-Agincourt was also announced. The Scarborough Health Network has the largest nephrology program in Ontario and provides care for more than 6,000 patients every year. To help the network continue to provide high-quality care and meet the growing demand for dialysis treatment in Scarborough, the government has invested $500,000 to support the planning and construction of a new chronic kidney disease facility that will be located in the new Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre community hub. The new facility will expand the network’s hemodialysis and chronic kidney disease programs and bring services together under one roof to make it easier and more convenient for patients to access lifesaving treatment.
Furthermore, to build a stronger, more resilient health care system in Scarborough, the Scarborough General Diagnostic Imaging Project and the Centenary Emergency Department Expansion will receive much-needed funding to improve the quality of care for the residents. “Our government is looking at every part of our health care system to improve access to care for patients and bolster the incredible work of our local hospitals,” said Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Every project at Scarborough Health Network will help meet the health care needs of families in the growing Scarborough community and put an end to hallway health care.”
- CEO Elizabeth Buller of the Scarborough Health Network:
“Aris, you have been tireless advocate for Scarborough-Agincourt and for the Scarborough Health Network. Thank You.”
- Premier of Ontario:
“Thank you MPP Babikian…you’ve been fighting for the people of Scarborough-Agincourt and are a big reason we are here today.”
